The length property returns the number of nodes in a NamedNodeMap.

Example
The following code fragment loads "books.xml"
into xmlDoc using
loadXMLDoc() and gets the number of attributes in the first <book> element:
xmlDoc=loadXMLDoc("books.xml");
x=xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName('book');
document.write(x.item(0).attributes.length);
