The parentNode property returns the parent node of the specified element.

Example
The following code fragment loads "books.xml"
into xmlDoc using
loadXMLDoc() and gets the parent node from the first
<title> element in "books.xml":
xmlDoc=loadXMLDoc("books.xml");
x=xmlDoc.getElementsByTagName("title")[0];
parent=x.parentNode;
document.write("Parent node: " + parent.nodeName);
